The non-profit Creative Tension, Inc. was founded by Rev. Elliott Robinson, JD, MDiv and launched nationwide in 2017.  Built on the concept of “creative tension” proposed by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in his famous “Letter From a Birmingham Jail,” the non-profit aims to inspire and empower a generation to discover, embrace and utilize "creative tension" in pursuit of justice for all people.

Dr. King developed ‘creative tension’ in response to the all-consuming oppression of Jim Crow segregation. Dr. King defined ‘creative tension’ as a constructive, non-violent and disruptive means of creating a crisis or fostering tension. Its purpose is to create so much tension, it requires both change and redress.

Creative Tension, Inc. brings together multimedia platforms, trainings, lectures and curricula to examine individuals and movements that utilized “creative tension” to combat systems of violence and oppression.

At the core of its offerings is the “Creative Tension Podcast,” which gives a voice to people and periods of struggle, forgotten by history. The podcast uniquely blends archival audio footage and interviews from real people from the Jim Crow era, with commentary from top experts in race and culture.  The Creative Tension Podcast takes an in-depth look into the messiness of American History.

Creative Tension’s mission and message are incredibly relevant in today’s highly-divided political climate. Through innovative content and engaging discussions, Creative Tension allows for an insightful journey through history and examination of the origin of modern-day ideologies.
